Noctuid Moth

Noctuid Moth

Common Name: Noctuid Moth

Order Name: Lepidoptera

Family Name: Noctuidae

Many male moths have elaborate antennas to comb the evening air for molecules of pheromones emitted by potential mates. The intricate network of sensillum hairs filter these scent molecules from the air and allow the moth to find the object of his desire at a considerable distance. Moths are not the only insects with finely tuned chemoreceptor. Certain beetles also expose their antennae to the scent soup of the evening air.
