Hook-Tip Moth

Hook-Tip Moth

Common Name: Hook-Tip Moth

Order Name: Lepidoptera

Family Name: Drepanidae

Adult Drepanid moths are unable to feed as they possess a very poorly developed tongue. The caterpillars have a pointed tail instead of the usual claspers and the adult moths have a hook-shaped tip on their forewings. This Indonesian moth has iridescent coloration on the under surfaces exposed in this photograph. Moths have a symbolic association with insanity. Navajo Indians believed the scales to be poisonous and cause insanity. The dust was also believed to be an aphrodisiac capable of driving someone crazy for you.
