Carpenter Ants

carpenter ants

Common Name: Carpenter Ants

Order Name: Hymenoptera

Family Name: Formicidae

Gnawing away at a decomposing log by the side of a tropical stream in Ecuador, these carpenter ants make their homes in excavated wood chambers. Formicid ants are quite varied but can be easily recognized by their elbow-shaped antennae. Most ants exhibit societal organization with female worker castes doing the brunt of the work. Surrealist artist, Salvador Dali often included groupings of ants within his paintings and was generally fascinated by their activities.
